Dive into an exciting opportunity as a Recreation Coordinator in Aquatics! In this role, you’ll help to shape our aquatics programs by planning, promoting, and running fun and safe programs for the community. You’ll lead and inspire our dedicated staff, contribute to the efficient operation of facilities, and help provide excellent customer service at the front desk. You’ll also help schedule classes, coordinate staffing, and make sure everything is ready for a great experience at the Durango Community Recreation Center and Lake Nighthorse Swim Beach.
About the Facilities:
Located at the Durango Community Recreation Center, our Aquatics Center is home to two pools, one 11-lane lap pool and one zero-depth leisure pool, as well as a 23-person hot tub and outdoor splash pad. The lap pool features public swimming lanes and one-meter and three-meter diving boards. The leisure pool features a current channel/lazy river, vortex, 160-foot waterslide, two lap lanes, and a shallow area with play features for children. Our aquatics staff also works shifts at Lake Nighthorse’s Swim Beach & Wibit Aqua Park during the summer months.
What You’ll Do in This Role:
- Support planning, organization, and delivery of aquatics programs and activities.
- Assist with administrative tasks, such as scheduling, payroll, program registration, and financial transactions.
- Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of aquatics staff and volunteers, including staff assigned to Lake Nighthorse swim beach.
- Oversee daily operations of aquatics facilities, including the coordination of community rentals, independent contractors, programming, and maintenance.
- Ensure facilities and equipment are clean, safe, and well-maintained; perform or coordinate minor repairs and routine maintenance.
- Monitor water chemical levels and make necessary adjustments to ensure safety and compliance.
- Maintain inventory and order supplies and equipment for programs, events, and facilities.
- Build positive relationships with customers, answer questions, and handle concerns in a friendly and professional manner.
- Promote a safe, welcoming, and service-focused environment for everyone using the facility.
- Help prepare and monitor program budgets, track expenditures, and support purchasing decisions.
- Enter program data into recreation software and ensure accuracy of daily cash handling and accounting.
- Contribute to the design and promotion of programs through brochures, flyers, social media, and website updates.
- Recommend and help implement innovative aquatics and safety programs to expand community offerings.
- Support the development of goals and policies to improve program quality and operations.
- Serve as Facility Supervisor in the absence of the Recreation Supervisor and act as Manager on Duty on a rotational basis.

Requirements
You Have:
- A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in recreation, physical education, leisure studies, sociology, communications, or a related field.
- Two years of progressively responsible experience in recreation services; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- The ability to obtain and maintain the following certifications upon employment: Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, Babysitting
- Training Instructor, Aquatics Facility Operator, and First Aid/CPR/AED. Parks and Recreation Professional certification preferred.

- Have experience working in aquatics or recreation programs and understand the flow of daily operations in an active facility.

- Bring a strong commitment to safety and follow established aquatic safety practices and procedures.
- Are comfortable using computers and common software for scheduling, registration, and communication.
- Can communicate clearly, follow written instructions, and perform both light and physically active work in an aquatic environment.
