Position Description:
The Campus Recreation and Wellness Department of the Division of Student Affairs is seeking to hire an Associate Director, Campus Recreation (Wellness, Fitness and Assessment). The Associate Director is one of two within the department and serves as a key department leader and part of the director's primary decision-making team. This position provides vision, strategic planning, and oversight for fitness and wellness programming at the Student Recreation Center at the Belknap Campus and Health Sciences Campus (HSC) Fitness Center. The Associate Director serves as the lead for assessment and strategic planning efforts, guiding data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives. The Associate Director works collaboratively with campus and community partners to advance a holistic approach to student wellbeing and serves as the department lead for campus expressive activity coordination efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides strategic leadership and oversight for fitness and wellness programs and promotion at both the Belknap Campus and HSC
- Supervise and mentors professional and student staff under the fitness/wellness umbrella, including the wellness manager, wellness coordinator, wellness registered dietitian, and sport program assistant fitness instructors and personal trainers
- Develops and manages budgets for fitness and wellness programs ensuring fiscal responsibility and strategic allocation of resources
- Develop programs, recruits staff, and manage a wide array of group fitness programs and personal training, ensuring high-quality, engaging experiences that meet the needs of the campus community
- Collaborates with Student Affairs stakeholders such as the Campus Health Services and Counseling Center departments' staff to create integrated wellness initiatives
- Ensures compliance with university policies, risk management procedures, and industry best practices related to fitness and wellness programming
- Serves as a resource for students, faculty, and staff in promoting fitness and the Eight Dimensions of Wellness
- Provides leadership and serves as point of contact for speech and distribution of literature policy and processes. Serve as department lead for coordination and management of campus and external-to-the-University expressive activity requests and events
- Facilitates development of marketing and outreach strategies to increase participation in recreational programs
- Leads departmental assessment and evaluation initiatives through the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data and collaborates with the Director to establish program goals and strategic planning that enhance student engagement, health, and wellness
- Represents the department on university committees and works collaboratively with other campus recreation leaders
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or doctoral degree in higher education administration, recreation, exercise physiology, or a related field
- Certification in health coaching, personal training, group fitness, or other relevant wellness areas
- Five (5) years of progressive supervision and leadership experience in campus or community recreation
- Experience in leading and supervising university campus recreation, fitness, or wellness units
- Experience supervising professional staff
- Demonstrated ability to develop and assess wellness and recreational programs
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to effectively collaborate with multiple stakeholders to advance student health and wellbeing initiatives
- Knowledge of risk management and industry standards for campus recreation and wellness
- Experience in free speech coordination or related campus policy initiatives
- Familiarity with budgeting, marketing, and technology tools used in campus recreation
Work Hours and Location
This is a full-time, exempt position with a 37.5-hour regular workweek including evening and weekend hours as required. Additional work hours may be required based on department needs, programming, staffing, and/or scheduling. The primary work location for this position is at the Belknap Campus. Occasional overnight travel (for professional development, conferences, student trips, etc.) may be required.
