Description

West End School (WES) is a tuition-free, independent, PK-8th grade school with a mission to provide a safe, structured environment for boys in which academic rigor, character development, and responsible action establish the foundation for a purposeful life.  Admission is open to boys who qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch and who are capable of attaining grade-level proficiency.  WES strives to address the issues boys in our community face by creating for its students a loving environment of high expectations and personal responsibility.  Through the School’s rigorous academic and personal standards, we inspire our students to attain the highest possible level of scholarship, character, and intellectual growth.

To fulfill our mission, we offer a boarding program for our middle school students to build a community of scholars, and so that our boys have a safe, structured place during the week to focus on their studies.  This also prepares them for the leadership and independence needed to be successful in college and beyond.

The responsibilities for a WES Teacher are, but not limited to, as follows:

  • Engage students in rigorous instruction combined with curriculum activities and instructional objectives that are standards based, measurable, and accelerate the transfer of learning and knowledge
  • Create and execute rigorous and engaging long-term, quarterly, weekly, daily, and lesson-specific lesson plans, specifically making them relevant or our boys and young men of color
  • Set clear short-term and long-term goals to drive instruction
  • Model and infuse the values of WES--Trust, Honesty, Forgiveness, Respect, and Perseverance--into curriculum
  • Maintain a productive, safe, neat, and focused learning environment
  • Execute and maintain appropriate student-centered discipline techniques and effective classroom management strategies to maximize student learning and time-on-task
  • Create and provide meaningful and frequent assessments to determine students’ growth and mastery levels
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instructional materials and strategies to provide differentiated instruction and address individual needs of students
  • Provide opportunities for re-teaching, remediation, and enrichment as necessary to ensure the growth and success of all students
  • Plan and chaperone field trips that extend our students’ learning and expose them to new opportunities
  • Keep parents and guardians well-informed about students’ progress, utilizing consistent communication, Progress Reports and Report Cards, and Parent/Teacher conferences
  • Partnering with Head of School and Counselor, create school day schedule for the academic year.
  • Maintain an open door policy
  • Participate in school-wide events (some of these may be during evenings and/or weekends)
  • Actively engage in faculty meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Perform all job related duties as assigned and in accordance with the rule, policies, and regulations, together with exhibiting high professionalism, standards of conduct, and work ethic
  • Other duties as assigned (may include lunch, morning/afternoon supervision, etc)


Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

An ideal candidate for a WES Teacher possesses:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least two (2) years of full-time teaching experience
  • Successful experience working with boys of color from low-income backgrounds

  • Successful background check
  • A deeply held belief that all students are capable of success
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion while accepting no excuses and taking personal responsibility for student growth
  • A willingness to go above an beyond for the success of our students
  • A commitment to igniting a passion for learning in children
  • An ability to instill and model a growth mindset for students, never giving up on students
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Outstanding organization skills and professionalism
  • Proven ability to take initiative and seek opportunities for continuous improvement
  • A commitment to work collaboratively with a close-knit faculty to do “what’s best for our boys”
  • Demonstrated dependability and an ability to be flexible
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders (including students, faculty, staff, and families)
  • Ability to utilize technology, including Microsoft Office programs (Work, Excel, Power Point) and Google applications (Doc, Sheets, Gmail, Drive, Classroom, etc)
  • Valid state of Kentucky driver’s license
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
