About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. Duties: Serve as an Instructor and Strength & Conditioning Coach within the Department of Physical Education, playing a key role as a founding contributor to the development and launch of a new Performance Institute.
Fitness Programming. Design and implement evidence-based training programs to enhance athletic and military performance, reduce injury risk, and support long-term development. The role includes assessing physical readiness, teaching proper movement and lifting technique, monitoring training loads and recovery, and coordinating with other performance and medical staff. Plan training cycles and schedules, manage facilities and equipment use, and ensure compliance with safety standards and best practices. Maintain accurate training records, assessment data, and reports to inform coaching decisions and communicate progress to leadership. Stay current with research, certifications, and best practices in strength and conditioning and applied sport science.
Instruction. The adaptable nature of this position may require teaching across multiple areas of the physical education program, including activity-based courses, fitness education offerings, and within the Kinesiology major. Despite this required flexibility, the instructor’s primary teaching responsibility will be within our Fundamentals of Personal Fitness course which emphasizes basic human physiology concepts and the mechanisms by which the body adapts to and benefits from physical training. Further, this course is closely aligned with the Army’s Holistic Health & Fitness (H2F) framework. Instructors must effectively communicate how to optimize performance through tailored physical training, effective nutritional fueling, recovery through sound sleep habits, and the development of performance-based psychological skills.
Additional Duties. Additional duties will include providing physical readiness training instruction during Cadet Summer Training, contributing to the professional development of faculty within the department, and serving as a member of a directorate or committee assisting in administrative duties in support of the department’s mission. Position may include working selected weekends, evenings and holidays. Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Appointment to this position may be subject to a two-year trial period. Current NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification.

This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 13 months.
Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Applicants will be evaluated on the following:
1) Academic Accomplishment (Master's or Ph.D. preferred) In Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology or a closely related field.
2) Demonstrated ability to design and implement evidence-based training programs to optimize athletic and military performance.
3) The ability to instruct personal fitness courses at the collegiate level.
4) Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary human performance technologies and software.
5) Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a strength and conditioning or performance setting.
