Position Description:
The Campus Recreation and Wellness Department of the Division of Student Affairs is seeking to hire a Manager, Campus Recreation (Competitive Sports). The Manager serves as a key department leader and is responsible to oversee and manage all competitive sports programming, engaging thousands of students annually. Providing operational direction for the University's intramural sports program, this position administers leagues, tournaments, meets, and special events. The Manager also manages more than 20 sport club organizations and is responsible for financial management, ensuring University and governing body compliance, and managing travel, equipment, and operations budgets. Additionally, this position also manages a designated scholarship budget for selected premier sport clubs, requiring a high level of financial stewardship and regulatory oversight.
This position manages and supervises a large staff, including a department coordinator, two or more paid coaches, and over 70 student workers, ensuring effective program delivery. Additionally, this position maintains relationships with key campus and community partners, including Unified Sports and Special Olympics, to advance inclusive programming, collaborative initiatives, and outreach efforts. The Manager also oversees the scheduling, maintenance, and safe use of the department's outdoor grass and turf facilities, supporting intramural and sport club activities, and participates in the facilitation of summer camps and clinics, leading revenue-generating initiatives, and advancing inclusive programming.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans and administers all intramural sports leagues, tournaments, meets, and special events including securing and scheduling on-campus facilities for practices competitions, and special events
- Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates performance of one department coordinator and more than 70 student workers serving as supervisors, officials, and other program staff, with a strong emphasis on safety, emergency response, and risk management
- Ensures student staff maintain required first aid/BLS and CPR/AED certifications and are trained in incident response, injury reporting, and participant safety protocols
- Oversee all operational functions of the sport club program, coordinating rosters, league schedules, and travel documentation; securing waivers; assisting to secure and coordinate off-campus facilities for practices and competitions; and ensuring compliance with Registered Student Organization (RSO) policies and procedures
- Oversee sport club operating budgets and advises and assists sport clubs with fundraising, revenue generation, marketing, equipment and uniform purchasing, and travel planning
- Manages a designated sport club scholarship budget for premier sport clubs, including forecasting, monitoring expenditures, and ensuring fiscal accountability and coordinates scholarship processes, including recruitment efforts, administering and awarding scholarships, tracking eligibility and enrollment of scholarship recipients, and ensuring institutional compliance with financial aid policies
- Oversee the recruitment, hiring, contracting, and onboarding of paid coaches ensuring compliance with institutional policies, background check requirements, and risk management standards
- Coordinates and oversees regular and post-season sport club travel with attention to safety planning, risk mitigation, and budget oversight
- Utilizes and maintains the sports component of the department's Fusion software and the associated Recreation & Wellness app to manage registrations, schedule and promote games and events, collect waivers, and send notifications
- Updates social media platforms and other media channels to communicate and promote intramural sports and sport club activities to the University community
- Researches, recommends the purchase of, and maintains expendable and capital equipment, ensuring safety standards are met and inspections are conducted accordingly
- Documents, analyzes, and reports participation, staffing, and usage statistics for monthly and annual departmental reporting
- Assists with the planning and implementation of summer camps, clinics, and other competitive sports revenue-generating programs
- Develops and implements program assessments to align competitive sports goals with Department and Division priorities
- Oversee and coordinates the daily maintenance and safe use of outdoor natural grass and turf fields managed by the Department including mowing, planting, fertilizing, irrigating, and seeding, ensuring all fields and surrounding areas meet safety, playability, aesthetic, and scheduling standards for intramural and sport club use
- Coordinates grounds maintenance for the green space and landscaping surrounding the Student Recreation Center, collaborating with external vendors, or by hiring, training, and supervising a student grounds crew
- Coordinates and supports departmental special events for student programming including new student orientation, Welcome Week, and various annual events
- Represents Campus Recreation & Wellness on University and Division committees and work teams
- Manages and maintains collaborative relationships with campus and community partners, including Unified Sports and Special Olympics, to support inclusive and mission-aligned programming
- Performs other duties and completes special projects as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in sports administration, exercise sciences, higher education, college student personnel, or a related field
- Coaching, referee, or other relevant certification
- Officiating experience in basketball, volleyball, soccer, or football
- Experience with intramural or sport club programming
- Experience supervising professional and student staff
- First aid/BLS and CPR/AED, certification
- Knowledge of campus recreation and wellness risk management and industry standards
- Familiarity with budgeting, marketing, and technology tools used for campus recreation and wellness
Work Hours and Location
This is a full-time, exempt position with a 37.5-hour regular workweek including evening and weekend hours as required. Additional work hours may be required based on department needs, programming, staffing, and/or scheduling. The primary work location for this position is at the Belknap Campus. Intermittent overnight travel (for professional development, conferences, programs and student trips, etc.) may be required.
